Introduce yourself – who you are, what you do, and where you are.

The Work:

John recently submitted a paper to the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer for a special issue to be published later this spring. The special issue features papers presented at the Light Pollution: Theory, Modeling and Measurements meeting, held last June in Spain.

Here are several features of John’s paper:

1. Radiative transfer modeling was used to predict skyglow changes resulting from an LED conversion
2. Measurements of skyglow were made in epochs approximately bracketing the conversion effort
3. Results of modeling and observations were compared against satellite “night lights”
4. Some evidence supports the hypothesis that dimming LED lights reduced skyglow
5. A clear need exists for further investigation of this phenomenon including constant monitoring

Team/People: John is the Director of Public Policy for the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). He earned a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin, and has held staff positions at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National Solar Observatory, Apache Point Observatory, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Throughout his career, he has been involved in education and outreach efforts to help increase the public understanding of science. In addition to his work for IDA, he is a founding member of the University of Utah Consortium for Dark Sky Studies, serves on light pollution committees of both the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union, and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. John is the author of two books on the history of astronomy, The Lost Constellations and Uncharted Constellations. The asteroid (14505) Barentine is named in his honor. His interests outside of astronomy and dark skies include history, art and architecture, politics, law and current events.
